The Enola Gay was escorted by two other bombers who carried cameras and a variety of gauges. Three other planes had left earlier to note that the weather conditions of possible targets.
It had been four cities selected as possible targets. Hiroshima was Kokura, Nagasaki, Niigata and cities chosen because they had been relatively untouched by war. Target Committee wanted the first bomb to be "sufficiently spectacular for the importance of the weapon to be internationally recognized when publicity on it was published."
